James T. Farrell

James T. Farrell (1904–1979) was an American novelist and short-story writer known for his realistic portrayals of urban life. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he drew extensively on the city’s neighborhoods and social tensions in his fiction. Farrell is best remembered for the *Studs Lonigan* trilogy—*Young Lonigan*, *The Young Manhood of Studs Lonigan*, and *Judgment Day*—which follows an Irish-American youth in Chicago and offers a stark picture of class, ambition, and disillusionment. Prolific across several decades, Farrell also wrote numerous short stories and additional novels, maintaining a commitment to social observation and naturalistic detail throughout his career.
