James Thurber

James Thurber was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1894. He lost one of his eyes as a child when his brother shot him in the eye with an arrow. Thurber attended Ohio State University but could not graduate because his poor eyesight prevented him from taking a mandatory ROTC class. Thurber began his career as a reporter in 1921, working for The Columbus Dispatch. Thurber started reporting for The New York Evening Post in 1925, and from 1930 to the late 1950s, Thurber contributed both writings and illustrations to The New Yorker. Celebrated primarily for his humorous essays and his illustrations, Thurber also published novels, short stories, fables, and nonfiction.
