Janet Flanner

Janet Flanner (1892–1978) was an American journalist and writer best known for her long-running “Letter from Paris” columns in *The New Yorker*, written under the byline “Genêt.” Based in Paris for much of her career, she reported on European politics, culture, and society between the world wars and after, bringing American readers vivid accounts of major events and public figures. Her work combined close observation with a distinctive, literary style and helped shape *The New Yorker*’s international voice. Flanner also wrote essays and profiles and was recognized as an influential interpreter of France and Europe for an English-speaking audience.
