Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru was born into an influential family in Allahabad, British India, in 1889. In his youth, Nehru became a passionate nationalist and attended Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1910. Nehru then returned to India and joined the struggle for Indian independence, becoming an outspoken political leader who worked his way up the ranks of the Indian National Congress. He eventually became Congress President and called for independence from Britain. In the early 1940s, Nehru was arrested and imprisoned multiple times for civil disobedience. In 1947, Nehru was elected as India’s first Prime Minister, and he used the opportunity to enact the Constitution of India and institute many social, political and economic reforms.
