Jimmy Carter

James Earl “Jimmy” Carter, Jr. was born in Plains, Georgia in 1924. He was gifted from a young age and also excelled in sports. After high school, Carter attended and graduated from the United States Naval Academy. He served in the Navy until he resigned in 1953 to run his family’s peanut farm in Georgia. Carter was elected to and served two terms in the Georgia Senate and then became the governor of Georgia in 1971. Several years later, Carter ran for and won the 1976 presidential election. During his presidency, Carter established the Department of Energy and Department of Education, though the end of his first term was marred by a stagnant economy and national energy crisis, and he was not reelected. Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
