Johann Paul Friedrich Richter

Jean Paul (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter; 1763–1825) was a German novelist and humorist associated with the Romantic era. Born in Wunsiedel, he grew up in modest circumstances and studied theology at the University of Leipzig before turning to writing. He gained wide recognition with the satirical novel *Hesperus* (1795) and became known for digressive, imaginative prose that blends comedy, sentiment, and philosophical reflection. Major works include *Titan* (1800–1803) and *Flegeljahre* (1804–1805). He lived for many years in Bayreuth, where he died in 1825. His distinctive style influenced later German literature.
