John Churton Collins

John Churton Collins (1848–1908) was an English literary critic and scholar. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, he became known for energetic, sometimes combative criticism and for work on English poetry and prose. Collins wrote studies and essays on major writers and periods, and he contributed frequently to leading reviews and journals. He was particularly associated with seventeenth- and eighteenth-century literature, producing influential criticism and editorial work on authors including John Dryden. His books include *The Study of English Literature* (1891) and *Studies in Poetry and Criticism* (1905). Collins also served as Professor of English Literature at the University of Birmingham.
