John D. Macdonald

John Dann MacDonald was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania in 1916 and grew up in Utica, New York. MacDonald attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania but dropped out during his sophomore year, working odd jobs until he was accepted by Syracuse University, from which he graduated. In 1939, MacDonald received his MBA from Harvard University. MacDonald served in WWII and was discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1945. MacDonald started writing short stories after his discharge from service, selling numerous pieces to mystery and science fiction magazines. In 1950, MacDonald began publishing novels, ultimately becoming best known for his crime thrillers, including the acclaimed Travis McGee series.
