John Henry (Cardinal) Newman
John Henry Newman was born in London in 1801. At age 7, he was sent to study at Great Ealing School, and at age 15, Newman was converted, becoming an evangelical Calvinist Christian. Newman attended Oxford and after graduation, he stayed on and took private pupils. In 1825, he was ordained an Anglican priest in the Church of England. In 1845, he left the Church of England and converted to Catholicism, eventually becoming a cardinal under Pope Leo XII. Newman was also known for his writings, including his autobiography Apologia Pro Vita Sua and the poem The Dream of Gerontius. In 2010, Newman was officially beatified by Pope Benedict XVI.
