John Henry Jowett

John Henry Jowett (1864–1923) was an English Nonconformist Protestant minister renowned for his preaching and devotional writing. Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, he trained for the Congregational ministry and became one of the most widely heard preachers of his era. Jowett served influential pastorates in Birmingham and in London at Westminster Chapel, where his sermons drew large congregations. He later ministered in the United States as pastor of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. Across these appointments he was celebrated for clear, vivid exposition and an emphasis on practical Christian living. His published sermons and devotional books reached an international readership and helped shape early twentieth‑century evangelical spirituality.
