John LeGay Brereton

John Le Gay Brereton (1871–1933) was an Australian poet, critic, and academic. Born in Sydney, he was educated at Sydney Grammar School and the University of Sydney. He became closely associated with the University of Sydney, where he taught English and later held a professorial chair. Brereton published several volumes of poetry and was also known for literary criticism and for promoting Australian writing and culture. He contributed essays and reviews to periodicals and took part in public literary life in Australia in the early twentieth century. His work reflects both classical influences and an interest in Australian themes and identity.
