John Maynard Keynes

John Maynard Keynes (1883–1946) was a British economist, public intellectual, and leading figure in twentieth-century economic thought. Educated at Eton and King’s College, Cambridge, he worked in the British civil service and played a prominent role in wartime and postwar economic policy. His critique of the Versailles settlement, *The Economic Consequences of the Peace* (1919), brought him wide public attention. In *The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money* (1936), he challenged classical economics and argued that governments could stabilize economies through fiscal and monetary measures. Keynes also served as a key British negotiator at the 1944 Bretton Woods conference.
