John Morley (Viscount Morley of Blackburn)

John Morley, 1st Viscount Morley of Blackburn, was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, England in 1838. He attended Cheltenham College, University College School, and Lincoln College, Oxford, but left Oxford early without an honors degree. Morley initially worked as a journalist before entering politics, and was elected a Member of Parliament in 1883 and then Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1886. Morley also later served as Secretary of State for India and Lord President of the Council. In addition to being a notable liberal statesman, Morley was also a celebrated political commentator and biographer. He left government in 1914 due to his opposition to Britain entering WWI.
