John Updike

John Updike (1932–2009) was an American novelist, short-story writer, poet, and literary critic. Born in Shillington, Pennsylvania, he studied at Harvard University and later attended the University of Oxford. Updike became a staff writer for *The New Yorker*, where he published fiction, essays, and reviews for decades. He is best known for the Rabbit series—*Rabbit, Run*; *Rabbit Redux*; *Rabbit Is Rich*; and *Rabbit at Rest*—which traces the life of Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom and earned major literary honors. His other notable novels include *Couples* and *The Witches of Eastwick*. He died in Danvers, Massachusetts.
