Johnny Mercer

John Herndon “Johnny” Mercer (1909–1976) was an American lyricist, songwriter, and singer. Born in Savannah, Georgia, he became one of the most prominent lyric writers in popular music, known for witty, conversational language and vivid imagery. Mercer wrote or co-wrote many standards, including “Moon River,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Accentuate the Positive,” and “Jeepers Creepers.” He also performed as a vocalist and worked in film and radio. In 1942 he co-founded Capitol Records, helping shape the postwar recording industry. Mercer received multiple Academy Awards for Best Original Song and was later inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
