Jorge Ubico
Jorge Ubico Castañeda (1878–1946) was a Guatemalan military officer and the country’s president from 1931 to 1944, governing as an authoritarian ruler. Rising through the army, he became a prominent figure in national politics during a period of economic and social strain. His administration emphasized centralized control, public order, and large-scale infrastructure and administrative projects, while restricting political opposition and civil liberties. Ubico maintained close ties with powerful economic interests and relied on security forces to enforce his policies. In 1944, amid growing public protest and pressure, he resigned and left office. He died in 1946.
