Joseph Auslander

Joseph Auslander (1897–1965) was an American poet and anthologist. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he became known for verse that often drew on classical and religious themes. Auslander taught literature and writing and was associated with several universities during his career. From 1937 to 1941 he served as the first Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, a position that later evolved into today’s U.S. Poet Laureate. He also worked as an editor and helped shape poetry’s public presence through anthologies and literary advocacy. Auslander’s books of poetry include *Sunrise Trumpets* and *The Unconquerable City*.
