Juvenal
Decimus Junius Juvenalis (Juvenal) was a Roman poet best known for his *Satires*, a collection of verse satires written in Latin. Active in the late 1st and early 2nd century CE, he is regarded as one of the major voices of Roman satire. His surviving work comprises sixteen satires, conventionally arranged in five books, which attack vice, corruption, and social pretension in imperial Rome. Juvenal’s poetry is noted for its forceful rhetoric, moral indignation, and vivid portraits of urban life. Although details of his life are uncertain, his influence on later European satire has been enduring, and his name became synonymous with biting social critique.
