Katharine Whitehorn

Katharine Whitehorn (1928–2021) was a British journalist and columnist, celebrated for her sharp wit and clear-eyed writing on everyday life, women’s roles, and social change. She became widely known through her work at *The Observer*, where her columns brought domestic subjects—food, homes, relationships, and manners—into serious public conversation without losing humour or scepticism. Whitehorn also wrote for other British publications and built a long career as a distinctive voice in postwar journalism. Her essays combined practical observation with cultural critique, often challenging assumptions about class and gender. She remains admired for making the ordinary feel intellectually alive.
