Lancelot Andrewes

Lancelot Andrewes (1555–1626) was an English bishop, theologian, and scholar renowned for his learning and eloquence. Educated at Pembroke Hall, Cambridge, he became a prominent preacher and churchman under Elizabeth I and James I. Andrewes held several senior posts, including Dean of Westminster, and served successively as Bishop of Chichester, Ely, and Winchester. A leading figure in the Church of England, he helped shape Anglican devotional and preaching traditions through his sermons and writings, including his *Preces Privatae*. He was also one of the principal translators appointed to produce the 1611 King James Bible.
