Lawrence Housman

Lawrence Housman (1865–1959) was an English playwright, writer, and illustrator. Born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, he became known for book illustration and for writing plays and poems, and he was associated with the aesthetic movement. He contributed to early 20th-century theatre, including works for the stage and adaptations of traditional stories. Housman was also a political activist, notably supporting women’s suffrage; he and his sister Clemence Housman took part in suffrage campaigns and produced related writings and artwork. He was the brother of poet A. E. Housman. Housman’s long career bridged Victorian culture and modern Britain.
