Leadbelly

Huddie William Ledbetter (c. 1888–1949), known as Lead Belly or Leadbelly, was an American folk and blues musician. Born in Louisiana and raised in Texas, he became renowned for his powerful voice and skill on the twelve-string guitar. His repertoire drew on work songs, spirituals, ballads, and blues, and he helped popularize songs such as “Goodnight, Irene,” “Midnight Special,” and “Cotton Fields.” In the 1930s he was recorded and promoted by folklorists John and Alan Lomax, bringing his music to wider audiences. Lead Belly later performed and recorded in New York, influencing later folk and blues artists.
