Leonard Bernstein
Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990) was an American composer, conductor, pianist, and educator. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and the Curtis Institute of Music. Bernstein rose to national prominence in 1943 after stepping in to conduct the New York Philharmonic on short notice. He later served as the Philharmonic’s music director (1958–1969), becoming a leading advocate for both classical repertory and contemporary composers. As a composer, he wrote works for the stage, concert hall, and film, including the landmark musical *West Side Story* (1957). Through televised lectures and the Young People’s Concerts, he brought music education to wide audiences.
