Leymah Gbowee
Leymah Roberta Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist and women’s rights advocate who helped lead the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, a grassroots movement that mobilized women across religious and ethnic lines to press for an end to Liberia’s civil war. Her organizing and advocacy contributed to sustained public pressure for peace talks and political change. In 2011, Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, shared with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Tawakkol Karman, in recognition of their nonviolent struggle for women’s safety and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work. She has continued to speak internationally on peace, justice, and women’s leadership.
