Logan Pearsall Smith
Logan Pearsall Smith was born in Millville, New Jersey in 1865, the son of prominent Quakers and the descendant of James Logan, the Chief Justice of Pennsylvania in the 18th century. After graduating from Oxford in 1891, Smith settled in England and became a poet, essayist, and autobiographer known for his epigrams and aphorisms. Some of his best-known works include his autobiography Unforgotten Years (1938), the English language resource Words and Idioms (1925), and the essay collection Trivia (1902). Smith was close friends with the poet Walt Whitman in his later years and was strongly influenced by the writer Walter Pater.
