Louis D. Brandeis
Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856–1941) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he built a prominent legal career in Boston and became known for advocacy on behalf of consumers and workers and for challenging concentrated corporate power. Nominated by President Woodrow Wilson, he was the first Jewish justice on the Court. Brandeis’s opinions and writings helped shape modern constitutional and administrative law, including influential views on privacy, free speech, and the role of government in regulating business.
