Louis (XIV)
Louis XIV of France (1638–1715), known as the “Sun King,” reigned from 1643 until his death and became one of Europe’s longest-ruling monarchs. He assumed personal rule in 1661 and centralized authority around the crown, making Versailles the symbolic and practical center of his court. His reign saw major wars, territorial expansion, and the 1685 revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which intensified religious persecution of Protestants. A patron of the arts and institutions such as the Académie française, Louis also left political writings, including *Mémoires pour l’instruction du Dauphin*, reflecting his views on kingship, governance, and statecraft.
