Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973) was the 36th President of the United States, serving from 1963 to 1969 after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. A Texas Democrat, he previously represented Texas in the U.S. House and Senate and became Senate Majority Leader before serving as Vice President. Johnson’s presidency is closely associated with the Great Society domestic agenda, including major civil rights legislation and programs aimed at reducing poverty and expanding education and health care. He also oversaw a major escalation of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Johnson is widely quoted for his speeches and political statements.
