Marcus Fabius Quintilianus

Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (Quintilian) was a 1st-century CE Roman rhetorician and educator, born in Hispania and active in Rome. He became renowned as a teacher of rhetoric and was appointed by the emperor Vespasian to a state-supported chair of rhetoric, one of the earliest known salaried teaching posts in Rome. Quintilian’s major work, *Institutio Oratoria* (“The Orator’s Education”), sets out a comprehensive program for training an orator from childhood through professional practice, combining technical instruction with moral formation. He emphasizes clarity, ethical persuasion, and the study of exemplary authors, especially Cicero.
