Margaret Atwood

Margaret Eleanor Atwood (born 1939) is a Canadian poet, novelist, essayist, and literary critic. She has published widely across genres, including poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, and is known for sharp social observation and speculative themes. Atwood is best known for the dystopian novel *The Handmaid’s Tale* (1985), which imagines a theocratic regime that controls women’s bodies and lives. Decades later she returned to that world with *The Testaments* (2019), a sequel set in the same society. Her work has been translated internationally and has influenced contemporary discussions of power, gender, and freedom.
