Margaret Mitchell
Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell (1900–1949) was an American novelist and journalist from Atlanta, Georgia. She worked as a reporter for the *Atlanta Journal* before turning to fiction. Mitchell wrote *Gone with the Wind*, published in 1936, a sweeping Civil War and Reconstruction-era novel centered on Scarlett O’Hara. The book became a major bestseller and won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Its 1939 film adaptation further cemented its cultural impact. Mitchell published no other novels during her lifetime. She died in Atlanta in 1949 after being struck by a car.
