Mary Tudor

Mary Tudor (1516–1558), known as Mary I, was Queen of England and Ireland from 1553 to 1558. The daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, she was raised as a Catholic and later faced political and personal upheaval after her father’s break with Rome. After the brief reign of her half-brother Edward VI, Mary secured the throne in 1553. Her reign sought to restore Roman Catholicism in England, including the revival of heresy laws. She married Philip of Spain in 1554. Mary died in 1558 and was succeeded by her half-sister Elizabeth I.
