Max Beerbohm
Sir Henry Maximilian “Max” Beerbohm (1872–1956) was an English essayist, parodist, caricaturist, and critic. Born in London, he was educated at Charterhouse and Merton College, Oxford. He became known in the 1890s for his wit and for drawings that satirized literary and theatrical figures. Beerbohm succeeded George Bernard Shaw as drama critic for *The Saturday Review* (1898–1901). His books include *The Works of Max Beerbohm* (1896), *The Happy Hypocrite* (1897), and *Seven Men* (1919). From 1910 he lived mainly in Rapallo, Italy. He was knighted in 1939.
