Maxine Kumin

Maxine Kumin (1925–2014) was an American poet and writer known for clear, grounded verse often shaped by rural New England life. Born in Philadelphia, she studied at Radcliffe College and later earned a master’s degree from Harvard University. Kumin published many poetry collections and also wrote essays, children’s books, and memoir. She received the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for *Up Country* and served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (now U.S. Poet Laureate) in 1981–1982. Kumin was a longtime friend and collaborator of poet Anne Sexton, coauthoring *Eggs of Things* and *More Eggs of Things*.
