May Sarton (1912–1995) was a Belgian-born American poet, novelist, and memoirist. Born in Wondelgem, Belgium, she moved to the United States as a child and later became a prolific writer across genres. Sarton published numerous volumes of poetry and fiction, and she gained wide recognition for her candid, reflective autobiographical writing. Her best-known books include the memoir *Journal of a Solitude* (1973) and the novel *As We Are Now* (1973), both noted for their intimate voice and attention to inner life, aging, and the search for meaning. She spent much of her later life in New England.
