Menachem Mendel Schneerson

Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902–1994), known as the Lubavitcher Rebbe, was the seventh Rebbe of the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement. Born in Mykolaiv (then in the Russian Empire), he later lived in Berlin and Paris before escaping Nazi-occupied France in 1941 and settling in New York City. In 1951 he succeeded his father-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, as leader of Chabad. From Chabad headquarters in Brooklyn, he guided a major expansion of Jewish outreach and education through a global network of emissaries (shluchim). Schneerson delivered thousands of talks and letters, and his teachings were widely published in Hebrew and Yiddish.
