Miguel de Unamuno

Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo (1864–1936) was a Spanish essayist, novelist, poet, playwright, and philosopher, and served as rector of the University of Salamanca. A leading figure of Spain’s Generation of ’98, he became one of the most influential Spanish intellectuals of the early twentieth century. Unamuno’s writing ranges across fiction, poetry, and essays, often probing faith, doubt, identity, and the tension between reason and spiritual longing. His public life and academic career were closely intertwined with Spain’s political and cultural upheavals. He is remembered for a distinctive, urgent voice that fused literary innovation with philosophical inquiry.
