Millicent Fenwick
Millicent Fenwick (born Millicent Vernon Hammond) was born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1910, the daughter of prominent politician Ogden Haggerty Hammond. In 1931, she met and married Hugh McLeod Fenwick, though the two divorced in 1945. As a young woman, Fenwick worked as a model for Harper’s Bazaar. She then worked as an editor at Vogue magazine for 14 years. In the 1950s, Fenwick became involved in politics and rose rapidly through the ranks of the Republican Party. In 1974, she was elected to Congress from New Jersey, serving four terms in the House of Representatives. After leaving Congress in 1982, Fenwick was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Food and Agriculture of the United Nations. She held this position until retiring at 77.
