Old Irish Song

Anonymous (Traditional Irish) refers to songs, poems, prayers, and sayings from Ireland whose creators are unknown. Many such works circulated orally for generations in Irish (Gaeilge) and, earlier, Old Irish, long before they were written down. Because they were transmitted by singers, storytellers, and communities rather than attributed to a single author, versions often differ by region and period. Some pieces survive in medieval manuscripts, while others were collected later by folklorists and song collectors, sometimes with English translations. In quotation collections and music archives, “Anonymous” or “Traditional Irish” is used as a practical label to credit the shared cultural source when no reliable individual authorship can be established.
