Orson Scott Card (born August 24, 1951) is an American novelist best known for science fiction. Born in Richland, Washington, he grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. Card gained wide recognition with *Ender’s Game*, which expanded from an earlier short story, and its sequel *Speaker for the Dead*. Both novels won the Hugo and Nebula Awards in consecutive years. He has also written fantasy, including the *Alvin Maker* series, and numerous essays and plays. Card has lived in North Carolina and Utah, and his work often explores ethics, faith, and the responsibilities of power.
