Ovid

Ovid was born to an important equestrian family in the area of Sulmo, east of Rome, Italy. He was educated in Rome and began pursuing poetry at a young age, writing primarily elegiac verse with erotic themes, including the Amores collection. However, Ovid’s most ambitious work, the Metamorphoses, was an epic poem about Greek and Roman mythology. In 8 AD, Ovid was exiled to Tomis (present-day Constanța), Romania, possibly for writing the poem Ars Amatoria, which concerned adultery. In exile, Ovid wrote the poetry collections Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto, which described his isolation and sadness. He died about ten years after his exile to Tomis.
