Hunter “Patch” Adams (1945–2023) was an American physician, comedian, and social activist known for promoting humor and compassion in medical care. He earned his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and became a prominent advocate for patient-centered treatment that emphasizes human connection. In 1971 he founded the Gesundheit! Institute, a nonprofit project aimed at creating a community-based hospital offering free care. Adams also worked internationally on humanitarian and health initiatives.
