Patch Adams

Hunter “Patch” Adams (1945–2023) was an American physician, comedian, and social activist known for promoting humor and compassion in medical care. He earned his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and became a prominent advocate for patient-centered treatment that emphasizes human connection. In 1971 he founded the Gesundheit! Institute, a nonprofit project aimed at creating a community-based hospital offering free care. Adams also worked internationally on humanitarian and health initiatives. His life and ideas reached a wide audience through the 1998 film *Patch Adams*, starring Robin Williams, which was inspired by his experiences and writings.
