Paul Engle

Paul Engle (1908–1991) was an American poet and educator closely associated with the University of Iowa. He served as director of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop for many years, helping shape it into a leading program for creative writing in the United States. Engle also co-founded the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, which brought writers from around the world to work and exchange ideas. Alongside his administrative leadership, he published poetry and remained active as a literary advocate. Through his teaching, institution-building, and support of emerging writers, Engle left a lasting imprint on American literary culture and on international literary exchange.
