Paul Samuelson

Paul A. Samuelson (1915–2009) was an American economist whose work helped shape modern economic analysis. Born in Gary, Indiana, he studied at the University of Chicago and earned his PhD at Harvard University. Samuelson spent most of his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he trained generations of economists. He made major contributions to mathematical economics and economic theory, including influential work in welfare economics and international trade. In 1948 he published *Economics*, a widely used introductory textbook that brought contemporary ideas to a broad audience. He received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1970.
