Descended from a powerful family, Pericles was born in 495 BC near Athens, Greece. He was a calm young man who was inclined toward education. In his 30s, Pericles entered politics, eventually rising to become the head of the Democratic party. In 461 BC, Pericles became the uncontested ruler of Athens. During his long reign, Pericles is considered to have been a populist leader who extended rights to the lower classes. He promoted arts and literature, leading to Athens becoming the cultural and educational center of Ancient Greece. Pericles also led his people during the Peloponnesian War. He ruled until his death in 429 BC.
