Peter Devries
Peter De Vries (1910–1993) was an American novelist and satirist celebrated for his sharp wit and wordplay. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was raised in a Dutch Reformed household, an upbringing he later mined for comic and critical effect. De Vries studied at Calvin College and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as an editor at *Poetry* magazine and later became a longtime staff writer for *The New Yorker*. His novels include *The Tunnel of Love* (1954) and *The Blood of the Lamb* (1961), the latter drawing on personal tragedy. De Vries died in Norwalk, Connecticut.
