Philip Dormer Stanhope (Earl of Chesterfield)

Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694–1773), was a British statesman, diplomat, and man of letters. Educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he entered the House of Commons in 1715 and later sat in the House of Lords after inheriting his earldom in 1726. Chesterfield served as ambassador to the Dutch Republic, as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1745–46), and as Secretary of State (1746–48). Celebrated for his wit and polished style, he wrote essays, speeches, and correspondence. His reputation today rests chiefly on *Letters to His Son*, published posthumously in 1774, offering advice on manners, education, and conduct.
