Pierre-Marc-Gaston de Lévis

Pierre-Marc-Gaston de Lévis, Duke of Lévis (1764–1830), was a French nobleman and writer associated with the tradition of the moralists. Often published as the Duc de Lévis, he is best known for concise maxims and reflective prose that examine character, manners, and social conduct. Living through the upheavals of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, he also produced memoir writing that blends personal observation with commentary on public life. His work continues the French taste for aphorism—brief, pointed statements meant to distill experience into practical insight—while preserving the voice of an aristocratic witness to a changing France.
