Preston Sturges (1898–1959) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and film director who became one of classic Hollywood’s defining comic voices. After early success writing for the stage and contributing screenplays, he emerged in the 1940s as a leading creator of screwball and satirical comedies. Sturges wrote and directed a celebrated run of films noted for rapid-fire dialogue, intricate plotting, and sharp social observation. His best-known works include *The Lady Eve* (1941) and *Sullivan’s Travels* (1941), along with *The Palm Beach Story* (1942). He was among the first major writer-directors in the American studio system.
