Quintus Fabius Maximus
Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus (c. 280–203 BCE) was a Roman statesman and general best known for his leadership during the Second Punic War. After Rome’s early defeats by Hannibal, he was appointed dictator in 217 BCE and adopted a cautious strategy of avoiding major battles, harassing enemy forces, and cutting supplies. This approach, later called the “Fabian strategy,” earned him the nickname Cunctator (“the Delayer”). Though criticized at the time, his methods helped preserve Roman strength until conditions improved. Fabius served multiple terms as consul and remained an influential voice in Roman politics and war policy.
